Student to Student Initative for Girls Scholling in Nepal

Background
The literacy rate of Nepal is one of the lowest in the world and in the SAARC region. We do not have better literacy status even for male population of the country. The total literacy rate of Nepal is 40% whereas women are 25 percent literate only.

A great challenge to the nation is to eliminate massive poverty from the country and provide basic needs to the people especially to those who are living in rural and remote part of the country. Keeping in view these challenges, efforts are underway to improve the quality of lives of the people of Nepal, but until and unless we improve the health, education and social status of women, particularly that of the adolescent and young girls, we cannot bring changes in the quality of lives of the people of Nepal. Because, the female population comprises more than 50% of the total population of the country. Besides that, the population of Nepal is characterized by young age structure. Approximately, more than 45% of the total population of Nepal is under 15 years of age and additional 19% lies between the age of 15 to 24 years. The young population is always active and is the main source of development and growth of the population in the future. Keeping in view the size of the young population and its implication in the future development of the country, it is imperative and unconditional to give due attention of this population structure in health, education and skills development for employment opportunities. But more than 50 percent of school-age children, particularly the girl children in rural and remote parts of the country either do not go to school or drop out before completing primary level of schooling. Early marriage and early child bearing among young girls are common. They have to live in restricted life options having very minimal rights. They are always vulnerable and at risks of sexual violence and human trafficking. The girls and women are considered as an object because of their low socio-economic status in the society due to ignorance, illiteracy. Poverty and poor health conditions. They have least and limited accessible to information and technology. They do not have the rights of making decisions of their own life such as how long do they have to stay in school. When do they have to get married and have their first child. Those who engage in earning also do not have rights of saving and spending of their earnings. To experience the miserable condition of women and children, no one needs to go elsewhere, but even within Kathmandu Valley, we can experience the situation among the slum dwellers and people living in shanties.
